Our name
Named for the flying fish constellation.
Volans takes its name from the flying fish constellation. Its stars give our identity a simple idea: a new perspective can reveal a connection you had not seen before.
That is the conversation we want to begin about your portfolio. The coast on our homepage is the Illawarra, where the founders grew up.

Hayden Matthews
Founder and Chief Executive Officer
Two decades in global private banking, including Head of HSBC Private Bank Australia and senior roles with JPMorgan and ANZ. Founded Volans to bring private-bank lending to the wider wealth market. Master of Science in Applied Finance, completed across Yale School of Management, Singapore Management University and the Swiss Finance Institute.
Glenn White
Co-founder and Responsible Manager, Credit
Co-founder of Volans. Leads partnerships and joint ventures with platforms and distributors, and is the Responsible Manager for credit under the AFSL, overseeing credit risk and credit advisory across the loan book. More than thirty years in margin lending and credit for wealth clients, including senior roles at Credit Suisse.
Nicholas Gleeson
Non-Executive Director
Non-executive director, based in Singapore. Chartered accountant and INSEAD MBA. Former chief executive and chief financial officer of listed and large private groups including BW Gas, BW LPG and ADNOC Logistics and Services. Brings capital markets and governance experience to the board.
Christopher Guest
Non-Executive Director
Non-executive director, Hong Kong. Commercial and relationship roles across Asia-Pacific, including Commercial Manager for Hong Kong and China at ATPI and financial management at Clifford Chance. BA (Hons) Economics, Royal Holloway, University of London.
Ben Tabell
Chief Technology Officer
Leads engineering of the lending and margining infrastructure. Formerly Chief Technology Officer of HSBC Australia after twelve years with the bank, then Chief Information Officer of eftpos Payments Australia. Twenty-five years in banking and payments technology across London, Hong Kong and Australia.
Robert Watts
Chief Innovation Officer
Leads innovation at Volans: new products, platform integrations, and the use of data, automation and AI in credit assessment and monitoring, within the governance set by the compliance function.
Leon Lee
Software Engineer
Builds and maintains the lending and margining platform, from platform data integrations to daily valuation and monitoring. Joined from Oracle; Bachelor of Advanced Computing (First Class Honours), University of Sydney.
Greg Wilkin
Head of Operations
Runs operations: client onboarding and wholesale verification, facility documentation, custody and settlements, and the daily running of the loan book. Background in banking operations at HSBC.
Vanessa Stephens (Brown)
Strategy and Compliance
Leads strategy and compliance: AFSL obligations, the wholesale client test, anti-money-laundering and privacy, and review of everything Volans publishes. Background in retail and wealth management at HSBC.
May Qi Hen
Analyst
Supports credit and operations with portfolio analysis, eligibility reviews and monitoring reporting. Completing a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and Data Science at the University of Sydney.
Andrew McDonald
Non-Executive Director
Non-executive director. Career banker in Asia-Pacific: Senior Director in HSBC’s Global Banking Financial Institutions Group, and earlier at Standard Chartered Bank. Master of Applied Finance, Macquarie University, and executive study at Cambridge Judge Business School.

Volans is a focused team across credit, technology, operations and compliance, with offices in Sydney and representatives in Singapore and Hong Kong.
The business was incorporated in 2021, began lending in July 2024, and has completed audits for every financial year since 2021. Credit decisions are made by Volans as the licensed lender; funding partners are not party to individual client facilities.
